The Neighborhoods of Rome...

Where do you want to sleep?

Rome is situated around the Tiber River, which snakes its way from North to South, dividing the city in two.

On the left bank, the Vatican City and Trastevere neighborhoods sit, while on the right, the Piazza di Spagna sits to the North, Piazza Navona to the West, and the Train Station to the East.

Near Piazza di Spagna
Situated Northwest of the train station, the Piazza di Spagna is home to the famous Spanish Steps, where hundreds gather to relax in the afternoon sun before strolling along the boutique and café-lined Via dei Condotti toward the center of town. The area is home to the 18th Century Baroque masterpiece, the Trevi Fountain, in addition to the lovely Villa Borghese Park, and loads and loads of stylish (and pricey) shopping possibilities. Not surprisingly, it isn't a bargain-hunter's paradise, though we found a few great hotel deals that have somehow resisted the temptation to upgrade to five-star status.

Near Piazza Navona
Located to the West of the train station and Southwest of Piazza di Spagna, the area surrounding Piazza Navona is a traveler's paradise, filled with fantastic sights, delicious restaurants, and some cool cheap hotels. In addition to the busy Piazza Navona, the area boasts the Pantheon, the bustling marketplace at Campo de' Fiori, and innumerable old churches. On hot summer nights, the Campo de' Fiori becomes "the" meeting point for thousands of young Romans, who gather to chill out in style.

Around the Train Station
Rome's main train terminal, called Termini, is located Northeast of the city center, but still very much within walking distance of the major tourist hot-spots. The streets in this area, constructed in the late 19th Century and organized into a grid, tend to be crowded and sometimes a bit boring. Like in most cities, the area around the station has a reputation of being a bit seedy, especially at night, though the hotels we selected seemed well situated for a hassle-free night's sleep.

Near the Vatican
Located across the Tiber River, West of the other parts of town, the Vatican City sits majestic. The focal point of the area, St. Peter's Basilica, took 150 years to complete and is Europe's largest, and probably most important, church. It's a neighborhood unto itself, decidedly set apart from the Rome of ancient ruins and trendy stores. Rather, the streets surrounding the Vatican City are residential and rather bourgeois, not what we'd call exciting, but pleasant. The area is two stops on the subway from Piazza di Spagna and within a five-minute bus ride of Trastevere, a picturesque working-class-turned-trendy neighborhood to the South.
